Kalabhairava astami:

We might have seen on south east side of siva temples a statue standing with dog as vahana, the foot adorn with bangles, snake adorn in waist, trisula, kapala, damaruka and pasam as ayudhams, having hair stood upwards with fire, and have moon also in the forehead. He will appear with two protruding teeth and look as if of ugraswarupa. Some puranas state that Lord parameswara had five issues and they are, ganesa, skanda, sasta, veera bhadra and bhairava. He was initiated to kill andhakasura and demon by paramesawara. That single swaroopa turned to 8 and again to 64 forms and killed all the demons. Devendra was pleased with their action and given 64 yoginies into marriage with 64 forms of bhairavas.
The bhairavas are decended from tatpurusha mukha of lord siva and they are, kala bhairava, martanada bhairava, kshetra bhairva, satru samhara bhairava, vatuka bhaivara, swarna akarshana bhairava ruru bhairava.
Kaarteeka masa Krishna paksha ashtami and margaseersha sukla paksha is termed as bhairava ashtami. On this day we have to worship bhairava. We should not take any food in the morning and after sun set do puja to bhairava and through out the night we should either read or hear about the stories and pravachanms ofbhairava without sleeping. This will begets us one year protection from akaala mrutyu and victory over enemies.
